Why I use the Zima pod for my retainers
To keep retainers in top condition, I recommend ultrasonic cleaning to my patients. It is clinically proven to be the most effective method of cleaning oral appliances. I use my Zima Pod daily to disinfect retainers, toothbrush heads, and whitening trays.
The Zima Pod and Zima Pod Pro both use ultrasonic waves to provide a deep, thorough disinfection- effectively eliminating bacteria and breaking down stubborn plaque biofilms that accumulate over time. With Zima Pods, there’s no need for brushing or scrubbing—just let the cycle run, and in five minutes your appliance comes out completely clean and damage-free.
You can use them with or without retainer cleaning tablets, though Zima recommends using them if your retainers have been worn for six hours or more. I haven’t noticed a difference in cleaning performance with the tablets, but I do prefer adding one for a fresher taste.
The Zima Pod performs well and i’m confident that it has prolonged the lifespan of my retainers. However, after testing the Pro, I appreciate the improvements.
Was the new Zima Pod Pro better at removing stubborn stains from old, stained retainers? Yes! The 15-minute cycle, with its varying intensities and cleaning bursts, did help brighten my retainers, compared to the standard clean- but the retainers have remained somewhat discoloured. To keep clear retainers looking their best, I’d recommend using the pod consistently from day one with brand-new retainers.
For me, the biggest upgrade was the detachable base—it made refilling the tank much easier. Since the Pods need to be plugged in, the detachable design makes it much easier and safer to handle at the sink.
The Pro is more expensive, and if you already own the original Zima Pod, I wouldn’t rush to replace it. However, if you’re in the market for an ultrasonic cleaner to keep your retainers in top condition, the Zima Pod Pro is a worthwhile investment.
Cleaning Performance
The Zima Pod Pro is tougher on stubborn stains
I tested the Zima Pod and Pod Pro at home on my own retainers. They both work well, delivering a deep hygienic clean, use after use. Using ultrasonic waves, and no abrasive cleaners, my retainers remain damage-free. With both, my retainers look clean and feel fresh after a cycle, with no visible buildup left behind.
The Zima Pod and Pod Pro both have the same 5 minute standard cleaning cycle, using 42000Hz ultrasonic waves. With no noticeable difference between the two, they both effectively remove daily plaque and grime.

Ease of Use
The Zima Pod is simpler to use – with a single cleaning mode
Zima appliances are incredibly user-friendly, designed with simplicity in mind. Both the Zima Pod and Zima Pod Pro feature a single button at the front to start the 5-minute cleaning cycle with just a tap.
A blue light indicates that cleaning is in progress, and once the cycle is complete, it switches off automatically. This is a nice safety feature, preventing overheating if you forgot to turn it off manually.
Tap once for the regular cleaning cycle, and tap twice for Max Clean Mode. A blinking blue light signals that max mode has been activated, and will run for 15 minutes.
Both models are intuitive and easy to use, making them hassle-free for daily use. One thing I would note, is that while the Max Clean Mode on the Pod Pro is handy, you need to take care when selecting the mode you want. It’s easy to accidentally double click and activate the Max Clean, meaning a much longer cleaning cycle.
Worried about the noise? Both have a gentle hum.The Zima Pod Pro operates even more quietly than the original. However, during its 15-minute Max Cleaning Mode, you might notice a slightly higher-pitched pulsing sound.

I love the sleek, clean design of the Zima Pods. They’re lightweight, compact, and look great on my bedside table, serving as a reminder to disinfect my retainers first thing in the morning.
The new Zima Pod Pro doesn’t look much different from the original—it’s just a bit larger and available in a few new colours. I particularly like the sage green!

A standout feature of the Zima Pod Pro is its modular design. The steel tank can be detached from the base, eliminating the need to detach the plug when refilling or emptying the water. Our Verdict
Zima Pod has proved itself already, but the Pro looks promising.
If you already own a Zima Pod, there’s no compelling reason to switch—it’s a durable, reliable product that does exactly what it promises. However, after testing both, if I were to purchase a new device, I’d opt for the Zima Pod Pro in the colour sage- it would look perfect in my bedroom! The Pro model wins in every department with its thoughtful upgrades.
I especially love the option of a max mode for tackling heavy buildup. Although the larger size of the Pod Pro is a nice enhancement, I never had issues with the original’s dimensions. The increased capacity is handy if you need to clean multiple appliances at once, but it’s best to avoid mixing appliances from different users to reduce any risk of infection.
