Some studies suggest that mouthguards may help reduce the risk or severity of concussions by absorbing some of the impact that would otherwise be transferred to the head and neck.
However, their main job is to cushion blows to the face, reducing the chance of dental injuries like chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth, as well as injuries to the jaw and soft tissues. So, while mouthguards do have a role in reducing the overall impact of blows to the head, they’re best at preventing dental and facial injuries.
